English electronic music and video producer Ste McGregor goes by the moniker Kidda.

He is signed to the Brighton based Skint Records,  run by Fatboy Slim, alias Norman Cook, and has been dubbed “a bearded 30-something one-man cottage business” by one national newspaper in the UK.

“Going Up,” McGregor’s debut album for Skint, will be released in the summer of 2011. His second studio album, “Hotel Radio,” will follow.

Other hits from his initial sample-based album, such as “Strong Together,” have reached the top of the charts in various European nations, including Italy, Belgium, and Holland. His song “Under The Sun” was recently licensed to Ultra Records in the USA.

Kidda is a recording artist, DJ, animator, and video director. He has created music promos for various musicians, including Midfield General, the Lo-Fidelity Allstars, X-Press 2, and Phil Kieran. Kidda has also completed animation work for US performers Rihanna and Kanye West’s live performances.

Along with sewing his tapestry, McGregor created the cover art for his album “Going Up,”  released in 2008.

McGregor,  born and reared in Middlesbrough, relocated to Nottingham in the UK’s Midlands to pursue a career in fine art.

After earning an MA in animation back in Middlesbrough, he started making hip-hop beats in his spare time and later relocated to Brighton on the south coast of England.

Danielson, a musician on Skint Records, contacted him to make a promo video for his song “Force Ten” shortly after he moved in with him.

After releasing two EPs for Brighton-based Catskills Records in the middle of the 2000s (decade), “The Shoe Cash EP” and “The Word Booty EP,” which led to additional video work with other Skint Records artists, he signed to Skint as a recording artist.

Kidda’s debut album was unique for being composed of samples that were then completely re-recorded, and it featured Gary Lightbody from the independent band Snow Patrol (on “Shining 1”) and a variety of other vocalists.

The album’s first hit, “Smile,” featured the theme song from the BBC sports program Ski Sunday, while “Under the Sun” had lyrics from a song by American songwriters Ashford and Simpson.

Although the majority of the money the spirits firm paid for its use went to the publishers of Ashford and Simpson, EMI, a segment of the single, was used in a global Bacardi television advertising campaign.

Most music magazines gave the “Going Up” album positive reviews.

According to MOJO magazine, Kidda’s debut “feels like the obvious sequel to The Avalanches’ widely praised ‘Since I Left You’,” with its “infectious hooks, delectable beats, and soul-tinged melodies.”

It was named album of the month in DJ magazine and album of the week in DMC Update. According to BBC Music, “Going Up” is the ideal soundtrack for this summer’s festivals since it sits somewhere between funk, pop, hip-hop, and old-school rave.

The same review continued, nevertheless, with the following statement: “More straight-laced musos may find it all a touch too camp and irritating. Although Going Up’s blatant and purposeful cheesiness appeals to this particular scribe.

Kidda is essentially like Marmite—you either love him or detest him.

The majority of “Going Up” glides over you, like airy muzak at a mall, according to The NME.

In addition to receiving backing from BBC Radio One’s Annie Mac and Kissy Sellout, the British producer Hervé’s remix of “Under the Sun” became a club smash. It was later licensed to a number of compilations, including Ministry of Sound’s “The Annual 2009” and Godskitchen’s “Anthems 2009.” A TV commercial for Warner Leisure also featured the song “Strong Together.”

The songs of Kidda’s second album, “Hotel Radio,” are said to be all original compositions by him and his co-writer Lee Muddy Baker, with a more pop-oriented flavor.

It’s also rumored that McGregor is getting ready for a live performance to promote the release of “Hotel Radio.”
